July 2009
Like her name suggests, Whiskey was mellow with age and surprisingly strong. Even though her rear legs were arthritic, she could pull you around like a feather in the wind.
After years of barrel racing, Whiskey had been abandoned. Sandy and Casey found her in July of 2007. The wounded mare had no water and was suffering in the intense heat. Her young pasture mate had already starved to death in their field.
Whiskey joined us that summer. She built up her weight, her strength and a loving fan club. The old girl soon taught us that she didn't want to be babied. She might be in need of some assistance, but she was still tough as nails.
Whiskey inspired us daily with her dignity and spunky determination. She had clearly been a talented beauty in her day. She enjoyed visits with children, and had a funny habit of pushing her grain pan around while she ate.
This summer Whiskey's hips and rear legs began to fail. The arthritis was steadily crippling her. Sadly, Whiskey left us one bright July morning. Our spirited companion and teacher has finally made her way home.
We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who made sure that Whiskey felt loved and safe during the past two years, especially: Sandy, Casey, Candy, Jaynellen, Frances, Jordan, Renee, our vets and farriers, and Whiskey’s biggest fan: Henry
